Urhobo people express satisfaction over Edevbie’s appointment as COS
By Jon Egie
Urhobo people and the entire PDP family in Delta state have expressed satisfaction and gratitude to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the appointment of Olorogun David Edevbie as Chief of Staff to the governor of Delta state.
This position was made known by Hon Chief Abel Oshevire a onetime Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to ex Governor James Ibori during a telephone interview with Spy News.
He said the appointment of Olorogun David Edevbie as Chief of Staff (COS) to Gov Okowa was a good and wonderful thing and gave thanks to God who made it possible.
According to him, power, promotion and elevation come from God and therefore, thanked God for finding Olorogun David Edevbie worthy of elevation to the position of COS.
“We thank Gov Okowa for his confidence in Olorogun David Edevbie in appointing him to that priceless office. Urhobo people, Afiesere people, Ughelli people, all lovers of democracy and indeed, the PDP family in Delta state are grateful.
“We urge our son, Olorogun David Edevbie to live up to the billing and do the state proud as usual. He performed creditably in all the previous positions he held in the past and this will not be an exemption. I am happy that he has done us proud before and he will do us proud again.”
Asked to react to critics’ comments on social media that the office of COS was a relegation, especially as the Urhobo people expected no less a position than the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Gov Okowa’s second tenure, Hon Oshevire said people must appreciate that the SSG, COS, CPS and other sensitive positions in government are senior aides to the governor and that the governor has the prerogative to appoint whoever he deems fit based on understanding and personal relationship.
“Governor Okowa has been with Olorogun David Edevbie since 1999. They both understand themselves and the governor believes that the appointment of Olorogun David Edevbie can contribute maximally to the success of his administration.
“Olorogun David Edevbie has been a COS to late President Umaru Yar’Dua even though he rechristened that office as Private Secretary to the late president.
“The COS is a personal adviser to the governor on all issues while the SSG is the clearing house for government activity. It is a very powerful and strategic office in government and there are already clear indications that it will even be more significant in the new dispensation. The governor knows Edevbie very well; he knows that they can work together as a team to actualize the Okowa vision of building a stronger Delta in his second term. Urhobo should also see this as an extremely positive development for the future”. Oshevire explained.
Meanwhile, Chief Ighoyota Amori has described Olorogun David Edevbie’s appointment as a round peg in a round hole.
“He is very efficient in his assignments. He has been the longest serving Commissioner in the ministry of finance and also served as Principal Secretary to late President Yar’dua. He proved his mettle.
“Governor Okowa was looking for energetic, efficient and knowledgeable person for the new reformed office of COS and he found it in David Edevbie. I congratulate him and applaud the governor for the appointment.” Amori said.
