Red House tops Oharisi sports competition

Red house came top in the 41st inter-house sport competition of Oharisi Model Primary School, Ughelli at the end of the event which held on Thursday 18th February, 2016. Red House scored 128 pts to beat Yellow House which scored 125 pts.
The 3rd position was grabbed by White House with 91 pts others were: Green House (85), Purple (83), Pink (82), Blue (69) and Orange (30) to pick the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th positions respectively.
It was a day to remember, as staff and students of the school partook in the inter-house sport athletic competition. The event which started about 11am was under the distinguished Chairmanship of Com. Okotie Titus, State Treasurer Nigerian Union of Teacher (NUT), Delta State Chapters with other dignitaries such as Chief Amos Itihwe DESOPADEC Commissioner Ughelli South, Queen Gladys Oharisi wife of His Royal Majesty, Mrs. Winifred O. Ighovbota (CIE Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Ughelli, Chief Dr. E.A. Okorodudu (JP) Ex-Commissioner, Delta State. Comrade Ohwokevwo David (JP) Chairman NUT Ughelli North LGA, Mr. Friday Onoberhie, Auditor Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) and the host of others.
The competition which had eight houses in contention was so colourful and security tight, for in attendance were members of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police Force and Eagle Chaplain Corps. The Chairman of the Occasion Comr. Okotie Titus in his opening remark, complimented the staff of the school and also urged the students to emulate what others have done in the track and field event positively and as well take every result that comes their way in the various houses at the end of the competition, and that every other audience should maintain peace and enjoy themselves.
Despite the hot weather, the students and guest were excited of the entertainment. The competition started with match passed, then 50m Kindergarten (K.G) race for both boys and girls, 100m race for both boys and girls filling the basket race, tyre race, high jump, 400m race, 1800m race and 4x100m relay. The event also has invitation relay by invited schools around the local government, schools such as Iwhreko Primary School, Otovwodo Primary School, Ekiugbo Primary School, Izomo Primary School and Ovwodavware Primary School.
The host of the competition Comr. Enayemo U.V. who also is the Head-Teacher in an address said “the importance of sports in human endeavour cannot be under looked as it helps to serve as a bond of unity, binding the people together. Also sports help to maintain healthy body, mind and soul, enhance physical and mental development of the body”. He also solicit on behalf of the school for full co-operation of parents, guardians and the government to collaborate in a partnership to give maximum support to the Nigerian children, so that they can combine extra-curriculum activities with academic work like as it was in the nineteenth century. He also urged parents and guardians on their parts to encourage their wards to accept sports and work in line with our founding fathers that foresaw that it is through sporting activities that ethnic, nation and international barriers could be ceased to create unity.
Furthermore, he also stated some challenged which the schools is facing such as a night guard to watch over the school properties, portable water, inadequate seats for pupils, sport facilities, a computer set with internet facilities installed to reach out to the world, iron protectors for the school computer room and scholarship package for pupils. So, he appealed to the government, parents and guardians to also come to their aid in combating this challenges that befall the school. Moreover, he appreciated and congratulated all patrons for their giant stride in sponsoring their various houses and making this event unique and enjoyable.
In an interview with the Head-teacher when asked about the difference between the 41st and 40th inter-house sport competition, he responded by saying that “there are many differences, in that the areas they were lacking in the previous one are well overhauled in this one, the turnover is greater than the 40th edition, the competitive houses increased to eight from six in the previous edition. Not only that the teachers and pupils were committed including the parents and government, the involvement of security and as well the Newsmen (media). When also asked on when the next inter-house sport competition will come up again, he said that “next year by the grace of God we will have another one because it’s an annual event”.
In the same dimension, the Chairman of the occasion in an interview said that “The inter-house sport was a successful event, the teachers tried because it’s not easy to organize, so we have to praise and encouraged them.
Comr. Eyamu Michael a teacher of the school in an interview responded by saying that “the sport this year is very fine and its hundred percent better than the previous one and the next one will be better than this one too”. Then the Chairman of the sport committee of the school Deacon Tobi Felix who is also a staff of the school, when asked if there were challenges with the members of the committee, he said that “in planning and execution, all co-operated that is why everything worked well”. In another interview with a student of the school by name Wanogho Gladys, when asked on how she felt in this year inter-house sport competition, she said that “it is very good and she enjoyed it especially for partaking in the 100m junior girls’ category where she and her housemate Merit Anyanvwe came out 1st and 2nd for Blue house. And James Believe a student of Purple house said that “I enjoy the inter-house sport and also happy because I came out 2nd in the 100m race for boys”.
The event which came to an end saw presentation of trophies by Rev. Mike Egbinine.
