PDP Leaders’ Group takes over control of party in Ughelli North
By Jon Egie
Worried by the dismal performance of the PDP in Ughelli North over the years, leaders of the party have formed a group with the mandate of re-positioning the party to secure victories in future elections.
The group known as Ughelli North PDP Leaders Group had its inaugural meeting on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Owumi Guest House, Ughelli.
During the meeting, Convener of the group, Chief Pius Ovbije stressed the need to synergize efforts to achieve a common political goal for the party in the LG.
He said the rating of the party in the LG before the eyes of the State denotes a dichotomy between the leaders and elders of the party and located the cause of the dismal performance of the party on the schism that exists between the leaders and the elders and hence, the group seeks to unite them and pursue a common purpose.
According to him, the frosty relationship between the leaders and elders has earned the LG the appellate of ‘Ughelli Nothing’ because the party members in the LG have not been able to deliver the PDP in guber elections since 1999.
He faulted a section of the elders of the party in the LG who the group accused of greed and selfishness in the affairs of the party which, consequently, led to a mass defection of aggrieved members and leaders of the party to the APC.
“But the group will endeavour to win them back especially as their fortunes were acquired through opportunities provided for them by the PDP”’ Ovbije enthused.
He said all major decisions of the party in the LG shall henceforth be taken by the group while the elders will play advisory role.
“Our major goal is to redeem the image of the party in the LG before the leadership of the party in Asaba.” Ovbije said.
Contributing, Chief George Osikorobia, a onetime Chairman of Ughelli North LGC and co-Convener of the group said: “We want to bring the party back”
Stalwarts and leaders of the party whose membership and active participation dates back to 1999 but one way or the other have been silenced attended the meeting.
The roll call included” Noble Abraham Whiskey, Hon Kenneth Ibru, Olorogun Moses Edafevwotu, Olorogun Uteme Bateren, Hon Frank Edevbie, Chief McPherson Egbedi, Hon Henry Itedjere, Chief Paul Okogu, Oriogbe Tallest, Emajemite Peter, Mr Joshua Tighiri aka MAHA, Hon Kennedy Akporoghene, Olorogun Agbemre Samson and Mrs Florence Ayomanor.
The Secretary of the group, Joshua Tighiri informed that the group will reconvene soon to marshal out plans for action.
