At least one person is feared dead and three others suffer different degrees of injury in a gun attack at Ogueka village, Uhunmwode Local Government Area, Edo State, Tuesday, Oct 3.
Report said that the gun attack allegedly was carried out by members of an opposing group over the Odionwere (Headship) of the village led by one Benjamin Osasere Evbagharu.
Benjamin Osasere Evbagharu is former Chairman of the banned Community Development Association (CDA) of the village, and son to Pulley Osaretin Evbagharu who continued to lay claim to the Odionwere position of the village in spite of the Benin monarch’s ruling in favour of Samson Egbon.
Benjamin Osasere Evbagharu led group had ambushed their victims who were leading police to get them arrested after they had caused unrest for two days in the village, it was said.
According to a reliable source in the village, apart from the person feared dead, three others suffering different degrees of injury are lying critically ill in an undisclosed hospital in Benin, the State capital.
Benjamin Osasere Evbagharu who sources claimed was apprehended and hospitalized after a mob action mysterious disappeared from the hospital.
Samson Egbon told our reporter that since he assumed office as Odionwere after resolution of the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II in his favour, Pulley and members of his group have refused to cooperate and join him on issues which affect the village.
Pulley has consistently claimed to be the Odionwere saying he was not bound by the monarch’s verdict.
They have continued to cause unrest in the village which climaxed in the shooting of the four persons on Tuesday, 3 October, 2017.
Corroborating Samson Egbon’s testimony, a native of Ogueka village, Victor Osarenoto said Pulley led group has refused to abide by the monarch’s decision on the Odionwere tussle.
He continued to lay claim to the position which he hitherto hijacked and has been terrorizing the people, Osarenoto said.
Egbon and his people appealed to the monarch and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore peace to the village.
Meanwhile, Pulley could not be reached for reaction as he was said to be ill and being hospitalized in an undisclosed location as at the time of writing this story.
But Egbon said the matter has been lodged with the police.
When the Police Public Relations officer, Edo State Command, Moses Nkombe was contacted, he confirmed the incident but said that it has not been formally reported with the police and no arrest has been made as at Tuesday afternoon.
He however assured that the police were on top of the situation.
On Tuesday, July 18, the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare had in his weekly mediation session affirmed Samson Egbon as the certified Odionwere of Ogueka village after Pulley had hijacked the position for two years
