Militancy has hampered our economy, Okowa laments
By Jon Egie
Delta State governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has lamented that apart from the global fall of oil prices, the activities of militants in the Niger Delta has remarkably reduced oil production in Nigeria with attendant negative impact on the economy.
The governor made the lamentation during the occasion of the commissioning of the Oteri Township Road in Ughelli, Thursday, June 9.
He said the duo of global fall of oil prices and the bombing of pipelines and other facilities of the oil industry by militants have made funding of projects difficult and hence, solicited for prayers to overcome the situation.
Governor Okowa called on youths in Delta State to have a change of heart so as to contribute to the growth of the economy by meaningfully engaging themselves in legitimate businesses and succeed through hard work.
In spite of the situation, Okowa assured that his administration will continue to work within the limits of the budget for the year.
According to him, his immediate challenge is to work hard enough to ensure that the entire people of Ughelli North LGA embrace PDP before the 2019 general election. In this light, he said, he has asked the contractor that handled the road project, Obakpor Engineering Ltd, to mobilize to other roads in Ughelli “because having come second in the 2015 general election, I believe I will win Ughelli North in 2019” Okowa said.
Thanking God for the project he hoped that his administration will do more and therefore called for patience as he desires to deliver quality job done to specifications.
He used the opportunity to describe Hon Festus Ovie Agas, a native of Oteri-Ughelli, as his personal friend who stood by him in thick and thin during the electioneering campaigns and hence, his appointment as SSG is well deserved.
Earlier, Dr Peter Oghoavwota on behalf of the Oteri community expressed gratitude to the governor for the reconstruction of the Oteri Township Road as well as the appointment of Hon Festus Agas as SSG.
He said Oteri is a loyal PDP community since 1999 stressing that the loyalty was showcased in 2015 general election when Oteri gave her all to the PDP. He assured that the feat will be repeated in 2019 for Okowa.
The Oteri community seized the opportunity to request the installation of solar powered street lights and the construction of drainages for the road.
In his speech, Chairman of the Ughelli North LGC, Hon Kenneth Ibru, appreciated the effort of the governor in reconstructing the Oteri Township Road and urged the governor to extend the gesture to other communities in the LGA.
The reconstruction of the Oteri Township Road was awarded to Obakpor Engineering Ltd at the cost of N249.3 million and commissioned by the Ovie of Ughelli, HRM Oharisi 111 on behalf of the governor.
