Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare N’ Ogidigan II has again used his administration instrumentality of alternative dispute resolution and crisis management to broker peace among his subjects; Evoekhoi community, Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State as beneficiary.
On 25 July, 2017, the people of Evboekoi community gathered at the Monarch’s Palace where he ruled that they go home to harmonize and allow peace reign without again unnecessarily dragging themselves before the police.
Monday Odigie, Okaighele (Youths leader) of the community told journalists that the Ohen N’ Ukoni (Priest of the community deity), his supporters on the one side, and the Odionwere (community Head] and supporters on the other side have been locked in fierce dispute over who should take charge during rites in the ‘Oguan -edion’ [traditional sanctuary of the ancestors).
The dispute had lingered and caused disharmony in the community but the Monarch mediated and has ordered that they go home and harmonize thus laying to rest every disagreement.
According to him, the Monarch in his ruling, said it was the duty of the Odionwere in council, his second – in – command, in conjunction with the Okaighele to carry out all rites in the traditional sanctuary of the ancestors and not the Ohen (Priest).
He further explained that based on the Monarch ruling, since the Odionwere [community Head] is on suspension on the order of the Oba, the second – in – command, Okaighele and the Ohen; collectively have the responsibility of presiding over affairs of the community which includes purchase and allocation of land.
Also speaking, Nosa Aseruwa corroborated the Okaighele. He said there is no cause for alarm; once they harmonize according to the Monarch ruling, announcement will be made in the media on the collective resolve and way forward concerning every aspect of life in the community.
While Anikeke Imasuen second – in – command narrates that the Priest had arrogated to himself powers and rights to preside over affairs of the traditional sanctuary of the ancestors.
Hence aggrieved members of the community decided to drag him before the Monarch; who ruled that he should reverse to status quo.
The Ohen is to be in charge of shrine of the community deity while the Odionwere, his second – in – command, and the Okaighele to take charge of affairs at the Oguan – edion (Ancestors’ traditional sanctuary).
On this basis, they must harmonize and allow peace reign in the community, he said.
The people were all joyous expressing gratitude to the Monarch for the ruling
