The Nigeria electorate has been charged to be conscious of the reason why they vote and elect officials into government.
The Rt Hon Sir Emmanuel Ona Igbru, one time deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly gave the advice during the occasion of the celebration of the silver jubilee of his marriage to his wife, Lady Maureen Igbru; Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 at his Ughelli residence.
Fielding questions from Spy News Online on his assessment of the performance of government in Nigeria since he left politics, Mr Igbr said, generally, politics in Nigeria has changed a lot.
“The craze for money has overtaken the real desire for service that people go to government to do. If you are elected as an official into government, you are supposed to serve your people. Any government official should desire social amenities for his people being the reason for which he or she went into government.
“But I do not think that is the priority for most of them now. It is very unfortunate; although they say the economy is the cause but we should make do with the little we have, make some sacrifices by trying as much as possible to serve the people in the area of education, social amenities and health services. Any government official, from the governor to the councilor should try to better the life of the citizenry.
The Leeds based Nigerian former politician charged the Nigeria electorate to know why they vote people into government stressing that if they were conscious of the reason why they vote, “they should be able to make changes”.
“If the electorate insists that they want good leaders they would have them, they should be proactive, able to access their elected officials and give them pressure to serve them. They should know the reason why they are voting. They should realize that government is meant to serve the people .It is government that organizes society and so, the electorate must be conscious of the effect government policies would have on them and therefore, when you elect an officer, all these must be at the back of your mind before you make your choices” he admonished.
Speaking on the success of his marriage for the past 25 years, he gave credit to his wife who he described as possessing all the qualities a good wife should have.
“She is hardworking, devoted, disciplined and the delight of any good man.”
Revealing the secret of the success of his marriage he advised men to listen to themselves, compromise and concede to their wives.
He counseled young brides to realize that the beginning of marriage could be turbulent sometimes due to the playfulness of the man, “but a good woman would hold fast and say well, I won’t let you misbehave”
He said his marriage employed the principle of give and take and above all “we had God and our faith in God has kept our marriage”.
Earlier, the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ughelli the venue of the 25th marriage anniversary thanksgiving was filled to capacity with the celebrants gorgeously dressed and visibly filled with joy in their hearts.
