Delta State governor, Se. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has appealed to the FG to put in place, a policy direction that will enable Deltans live in peace in their own state without harassment from Fulani herdsmen.
The governor made the appeal during the occasion of the open air thanksgiving service held at the Ughelli Township Stadium, which climaxed the activities marking the 25th coronation anniversary and 64th birthday of the Ovie of Ughelli, HRM, Wilson Ojakovo, Oharisi 111; Saturday, April 29.
Governor Okowa said the Delta State Government has done a lot to tolerate the excesses of Fulani herdsmen noting however, that as a national security challenge, the DTSG has appealed to the FG to point a policy direction that would enable Deltans enjoy the peace in their home land without undue harassment from the herdsmen.
He said Deltans as hospitable and law abiding citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria do not itch to disallow citizens of Nigeria from other states across the country from staying and doing business in their communities but stressed that in accommodating them such persons should not pose a threat to the right of life of Deltans.
Recalling incidences of harassment, violence, disruption of economic activities and threat to the lives of Deltans by the Fulani herdsmen, Governor Okowa thanked the traditional rulers across the State, the Police formations and other security agencies for their effort in keeping the peace.
“I appeal to our people to continue in the peace engagement process while we continue to engage the FG for policy direction to address the problem.”
Governor Okowa described the Ughelli kingdom as peaceful and hoped that all kingdoms in the State would be as peaceful as the Ughelli kingdom so that he would have fewer jobs in his hands.
On the state of the economy, Gov Okowa appreciated Deltans for remaining calm in the face of very difficult times believing that very soon, “Nigeria will get out of recession and Deltans will smile again”.
Okowa recognized the huge population of people in Ughelli Township and the attendant large population of unemployed persons in Delta State as well as in Ughelli but stressed that the only way to guarantee employment opportunities was for the people to create an enabling environment that would encourage investors to come in.
He said every traditional ruler that is helping to provide peace in their domain is doing a great job for the DTSG and appealed to political appointees to assist and cooperate with the traditional rulers to achieve the peace.
He commended sons of the Ughelli kingdom serving in his government namely: Hon Festus Ovie Agas (SSG), Olorogun David Edevbie (Hon Commissioner of Finance) and the member representing Ughelli Constituency 11, in the DTHA (Hon Prince Eric Oharisi); saying they have done very well.
He particularly commended Olorgun David Edevbie stressing that in spite of the recession, “Olorogun David Edevbie has done wonderfully well in helping his administration reconcile figures, even when resources are lean” and for Hon Eric Oharisi he remarked, “I do not doubt his loyalty”.
Earlier, the Rt Rev Diamond Emuobor, the Chairman of CAN in Ughelli in a sermon said most of the calamities and sicknesses in the world are caused by disobedience to the laws of God.
He said deliverance from such calamities and sicknesses demand thanksgiving to God who alone provides solution to such challenges.
He said longevity of life is also a gift of God and the Ovie of Ughelli who clocked 64 had every reason to thank God.
The 25the coronation anniversary kicked off on Sunday, April 23 at the All Saints Cathedral Church, Ughelli where the Bishop of Ughelli Diocese (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Cyril Odutemu commissioned the Ughelli monarch as an Evangelist of the Gospel of Christ with a mandate to go and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all and sundry.
Responding, HRM, Oharisi 111 expressed gratitude to the Bishop and Church for the honour and used the opportunity to donate 50 copies of the Holy Bible to the Gideon International for propagation of the gospel.
