More and more reactions and condemnations have continued to trail the December 5, 2015 Bayelsa state governorship election that was characterized by plethora of electoral frauds which led to the outright postponement of the exercise in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
Arising from a meeting, a group under the aegis of United Governorship Forum for Credible Election in a press briefing in Yenagoa have raised doubts about the conduct of any re – rescheduled elections in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.
According to the group’s chairman, William Oyinkuro Beriezi who spoke on behalf of ten others alleged that some politicians colluded with the security agencies to cause the various electoral frauds that took place in Southern Ijaw that culminated in the wanton destruction of lives and properties which led to cancellation of the election there.
They said they were worried that agencies of government such as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Army, the Police and others that were charged with the responsibility of providing security and peace later turned blind eye and allowed a particular party to have a field day as against free, fair and credible poll. “We must restate here for the avoidance of doubt some crucial bodies colluded with politicians to perpetrate violence and massive electoral fraud and wanton destruction of lives and properties because they refused to do their jobs as expected of them and we hereby condemn such unpatriotic disposition to national duty. It was indeed a disservice to our nation” they posited.
They also expressed fear and worry should the election be re-conducted with the same government agencies, the police, Army and others being involved would be able to produce free, fair and credible elections and therefore called for the immediate deployment of police DIG Hashimu Argungun, the Bayelsa state Commissioner of Police, Nasir Oki from further involvement in the remaining part of the election.
” Both men through their activities during the election showed an extreme level of bias in favour of APC and we are convinced that their further participation in the proposed re- scheduled election will only lead to a repeat performance of such intolerable disaster we witnessed last week” they stressed.
Also for the re- scheduled election to be free and fair , they further called on the military high command in Abuja to completely withdraw all soldiers deployed to provide security in that local government area, and urged INEC to jettison all its materials that have been used and provide fresh materials and that all NYSC members that have been held hostage by politicians and Ex – militants loyal to APC should be released and INEC should purge itself of its staff that compromised their official duties.
The group finally called on President Muhammed Buhari to immediately check the undue influence of his aides such as the SSG, the Minister of Defence and Director – General of DSS who were alleged to be the unseen hands who manipulated the electoral process .
