The All Progressives Congress (APC), Wednesday, Sept. 25, concluded its primaries for the Delta Central Senatorial bye-election with Olorogun O’tega Emerhor picking the ticket of the party by polling 1,674 votes against 36 by radical Lagos Lawyer, Barrister Festus Keyamo to floor the latter.
The primary which was conducted under a peaceful atmosphere in Ughelli Kingdom Hall, Delta State, saw party delegates from seven local government areas out of the eight local government areas in Delta Central Senatorial district voting massively for Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, making him to have a landslide victory against Barrister Keyamo.
Earlier, Festus Keyamo had alleged fraud in the yet to be conducted election describing the exercise as a sham and threatened to protest before storming out of the election venue with his supporters who were trailed with a boo by the huge supporters of Olorogun Emerhor Ortega.
While announcing the result, Senator Osita Izunaso who was the chairman electoral committee and also the Returning Officer said the election was conducted in line with the 2010 Electoral Act as amended. He informed that delegates from Ethiope West were disqualified from participating in the election and at the end of the day Barr Festus Keyamo polled 36 votes to trail Olorogun Emrhor Ortega who score 1764 votes to emerge as the APC flag bearer for the Delta central senatorial bye-election and consequently presented the certificate of candidacy to the winner.
Addressing his teeming supporters after receiving the certificate, Olorogun Emerhor said; “This day you have elected me to carry the flag of APC as your candidate in this forth coming senatorial bye-election. I feel highly elated today that I have picked the ticket of our great party. This is not about my fight, but the fight for the future of the Urhobo nation and Delta as a state. The birth of APC was timely to provide alternative to our people. The party will provide a platform for people of Delta Central. Our people have not been well accommodated in the ruling party; they are being treated as second class citizens.
Olorogun Emrhor added that; “With this ticket that I have picked today, we are going to fight for the upliftment of our people. This APC ticket is going to be very interesting, it will provide platform that can allow progressives in Delta Central to achieve their potentials.”
According to him also; “It is a good thing that we have been able to conclude the primaries peacefully and we now have one candidate. This will provide basis for unity of all members of the party and this is time for all of us to work together under one platform. Opposition is not within but outside.
“Two aspirants wanted to have this candidature but as you know only one person can have it. Although the circumstances under which the other aspirant decided not to participate is not the best, but that is the decision he has to make. We will do our best to accommodate everybody. We believe he is a true party man and for the good of APC, we will continue to see how we can all work together to ensure that we harmonize all disputes. The election is coming very shortly in October 5th; we must unite the house quickly and work towards winning the election. We know who we want to contest with. We know them and we must continue to work together in order to win this seat. Finally let me thank the national officers, the chairman of the primary committee and other officers who are here today for their sacrifice and others for spending their time and diligence in conducting this peaceful primary,” he added.
Meanwhile a chieftain of APC in Delta State, Dr. (Mrs.) Veronica Ogbaugu has congratulated Olorogun Emerhor for his landslide victory at the party’s primaries, saying that, “O’tega Emerho is a new wine in a new wine skin
While describing Emerhor as a principled politician and a successful businessman, Dr. Ogbaugu urged people of Delta Central to vote enmasse for Olorogun Emerhor and protect their votes against hijackers, adding that; “All those who have been planted in the party to destabilize it will be shown the way out at the appropriate time.”
