Edo 2020: Godwin Obaseki running into brick wall?
* PDP gives stringent conditions
By Kingsley Abavo, Benin
As preparations for the governorship election in Edo State next year gather momentum, revelation are beginning to emerge that the Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his gang may be heading for the rock picking a second term ticket.
This is allegedly because consciously or unconsciously, the triumvirate: Obaseki, his deputy, Comr. Philip Shuaibu and the SSG, Osarodion Ogie have committed political hara-kiri, analysts say.
Consequently, fearing that he may not get the sole governorship ticket of his Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term, the Governor is said to have led his deputy and the SSG to secretly negotiate their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Impeccable sources within the APC disclosed that the plan which earlier seems very perfect is beginning to look like impossibility.
The PDP was alleged to have given stringent conditions to the Governor which he is finding difficult to come to term with.
Unconfirmed sources said he has been asked to bring the sum of N5billion, drop his deputy, Philip Shuaibu for Dan Osi Orbih and drop eight commissioners in his present cabinet for replacement that would be given to him.
While others speculate that the embattled Governor was told straight that he should forget the PDP governorship ticket as the best he could be considered for, is the deputy position.
He met with Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, Nyesome Wike of Rivers State and leaders of the PDP in Edo who took him to meet with the national Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus in Abuja.
After the alleged Abuja meeting, they again met at the birthday celebration of the former APC national Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun in Benin.
Thereafter, he was told that he cannot get the PDP ticket easily like it is obtained in the APC. He must fulfill the outlined conditions.
The Governor now torn between the devil and deep blue sea is said to be very careful considering the available options before him.
As he cannot be dead sure that he would be given the PDP governorship ticket even as the idea of dropping his deputy and paying the sum of N5billion seem not pleasant to him, neither the option of being a deputy that obviously would be a demotion after being a Governor.
However, the prevailing situation has knocked the Governor and his deputy against each other, we further scooped.
Shuaibu reportedly is angry at the Governor feeling that he is been betrayed and sacrificed after sticking out his neck in the Edo APC crisis in his support.
Meanwhile, the SSG is also not finding it funny at the home front as his APC members in his constituency of Ikpoba – Okha have slammed suspension on him after his rejection in his ward 7 as leader of the Party in the Local Government Council area.
