Delta CP orders investigation of a police officer over allegation of extortion
By Jon Egie
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Akali Usman has ordered the Ughelli Area Police Commander, Mr Pedro A.S. to investigate a police officer, one Mr German, head of Dragon 19 attached to the SARS in Ughelli.
The order was sequel to a complaint by an operative of the local vigilante, alleging that the said police officer had been using the name of the CP to extort money from unsuspecting innocent Nigerians.
The CP had convened a town hall meeting with the people of Ughelli at the Ughelli Kingdom Hall, on Tuesday, Sept.29. He earlier paid a courtesy call to the palace of the Ovie of Ughelli to pay homage to the monarch and intimate him of his mission.
During the town hall meeting, a member of the Ogor community vigilante group after being recognised to speak, made an emotional appeal to the CP for help to rescue him from the vice grip of a police officer serving in Ughelli.
The vigilante member complained that a few months back, after closing from the surveillance duty of the day, he was on his way home when a patrol team of policemen accosted him with his firearm.
He explained to the CP that “when we close, our chairman allows us to go home with our walking stick to protect ourselves. So when the policemen met me I identified myself to them and told them that my firearm is not illegal and that the community bought them and handed them over to the police for registration before we were allowed to use them to protect the area”.
In spite of all his explanation the police patrol team code named Dragon 19 led by one Mr German refused to budge. They got the vigilante operative arrested and detained for several days. When the community that engaged the services of the operative intervened, the said Mr German was quoted to have demanded for a huge sum of money from them to settle his boss in Asaba before the matter would be squashed.
According to the operative, although he had temporarily regained his freedom but the demand of money from the police officer was still on and he begged the CP to intervene and deliver him from the hands of the said German.
At the end of the narrative, the whole hall reverberated a hoot of condemnation at the police officer in question and looked at the CP for justice.
Rising to the occasion, Mr Akali Usman said when he often gave praise to Mr Imonin Macaulay, the police officer in charge of DSS (Divisional Surveillance Squad) for doing a good job in fighting crime and criminality in the state, people would not understand.
He said when he transferred Macaulay from Ughelli very many prominent indigenes of the community petitioned him demanding for hid redeployment back to Ughelli in acknowledgment of his hard work.
In the light of the recognition of the excellent performance of Mr Macaulay in fighting crime and criminality in the town, the CP directed that a letter of commendation be written to Macaulay to further encourage him.
He also directed the Area Commander to immediately launch an investigation on Mr German’s activities as alleged by the vigilante operative and report the findings to him. He assured that if found culpable, the police officer (Mr German) will be punished and any rights of the complainant that may have been violated will be compensated.
The meeting hailed a yell of satisfaction at the decision of the CP.
Highlight of CP’ s visit was the commission of the DSS office in Ughelli.
