Come to our rescue, indigenes of Obaretin appeal to Oba of Benin, Obaseki over alleged attack
By Kingsley Abavo, Benin
The acting Odionwere, elders and people of Obaretin village in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, have passionately appealed to the Benin Monarch, HRM Oba Ewuare II, Edo State Government and all relevant security agencies, to come to their aid for alleged persistent attack by the Ogiamen family in connivance with the former Okaighele of the Village, one Osaretin Osabuohien Uhumwagho.
Making the appeal recently at an enlarged meeting in the village, they lament, the Ogiamen family in collaboration with Uhumwagho a former Okaighele of the village, have continued to attack and arrest them especially, the youths, in a bid to claim their land.
Speaking to Journalists after the meeting, the acting Odionwere, Pa. Albert Aiwansoba Ogiemwonyi said the latest problem began when Uhumwagho was sacked by the Elders’ Council as the Okaighele of Obaretin Village.
He was removed from office due to his excesses, and no regards for the elders; collaborating with the family of the Ogiamien in the incessant attack of the people of Obaretin Village, Pa. Albert said.
He went on to deny the accusation by Uhumwagho that Obaretin elders sponsored their armed youths to carry out assassination attack on him recently, in his house.
The accusation is totally false, an attempt to blackmail the people of Obaretin and bring them to disrepute he said, adding, that it should be disregarded by everyone.
“It is all tissue of lies designed, to continue harassing us with security operatives in the struggle of the ‘Ogiamien family’ to forcefully claim our land.”
Also speaking, the secretary, Philip Ogbemudia said that there is no village in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area known and called ‘Ubiaza-evbogiamien.
“What they are trying to do is forming a Community which is unheard of in the history of great Benin Kingdom, because they want to claim ownership of our land.”
He asserts, however, the people of Obaretin are peace loving, and ready to mend fences with their antagonist; ‘Ogiwmien family’ as they had lived in their midst as sojourning farmers from time immemorial.
To this end, a peace meeting arranged for both sides was honoured by only one person from the Ogiamien family, and he was asked to go bring other members (elders) before dialogue could go on.
“Unfortunately, this effort was truncated when they attacked us again, in collaboration with Uhumwagho, they raided Obaretin with police and arrested our youths to Abuja on trump-up charges.
“Hence the appeal to the great Oba Ewuare II, the Governor and relevant security agencies to come to our rescue.”
However, efforts to get the police to speak on the assassination allegation by Uhumwagho was not successful as at the time of filing this report.
But the head of Vigilante Operatives in the area (Amagba), where Uhumwagho alleged the assassination attempt on his life occured, Pastor Kingsley Owie Oghodomwanse said the Group was not aware it happened.
Should any shooting happen, he must be called upon as the Group have always maintained a very high security watch in the area, Owie asserts.
