Benin Monarch condemns incessant strike action in Health sector

Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare N’ Ogidigan II has condemned in clear terms incessant strike actions in the Nigeria health sector which he noted, cripple medical services and negatively affect the patients who are supposed to be cared for.
Strike action is against the Hippocratic oath sworn to by medical doctors which makes reasons often bandied for these actions unreasonable, he reminded.
The Monarch bared his mind during the courtesy visit of the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole to his Palace on Monday.
Oba Ewuare II however urged the Federal Government to address the problems in the health sector towards providing adequate care services to the people.
This is as he drew attention of the Minister to the lack of adequate diagnostic facilities in the hospitals across the country pointing out that early detection of any ailment was the best way for curing it.
The Monarch also tasked the Federal Government on the provision of adequate medical facilities to meet the health needs of rural dwellers in the country who find it difficult to access medical care in the cities.
While commending the Federal Government on its efforts in the eradication of polio, malaria and other diseases, he charged the Minister and Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital [UBTH] to be objective in the appointment of the next Chief Medical Director [CMD].
The appointment should be based on professionalism, performance, and popular choice of the people, the monarch said.
Tenure of the incumbent CMD, Mike Ibhadin expired on the 16 June, 2017.
The Minister earlier told the Oba that he was in Benin to inaugurate projects executed by Dr. Ibhadin whom he described as an excellent administrator.
Prof. Adewole in reaction to the monarch’s address asserted that he was working with the Minister of Health for State, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, a native of Edo, to improve health care services in Nigeria and assured that the University of Benin Teaching Hospital will be improved upon to make exploits in the medical field especially in the care for cancer.
He congratulated the Monarch for his successful ascension to the throne of his ancestors.
