Bayelsa gov polls: Dickson talks tough, degrades Sylva
Amos Odeh, Yenagoa
Shortly before the governorship election slated for December 5., People’s Democratic Party (PDP) sole candidate, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said that the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state does not have a candidate, as former Governor, Timipre Sylva is not electable and also ineligible as a result of his misrule while in office, recent promotion of violence that characterized the APC primary and the resurgence of cult groups in the state ahead of the polls.
This, Dickson said in a transparency briefing at the banquet hall of Government House in Yenagoa,
He noted that the debt that former Governor Sylva plunge the state into is still a huge burden, but noted that the Restoration Government under his leadership is still paying the sacrifice, even as he noted that N1.5BN was deducted from the inflow which stands at N7.6BN at source from the dwindling statutory allocation from the federal government to service the debt.
Continuing, he posited that N4.9BN was released to pay civil servants, N252M for overheads cost, but not to all ministries, other deductions are: bank charges, COT, and Vat out of the meagre balance of N6.2BN, while N1.35BN is saved for the rainy days, but it cannot be accessed owing to court order.
The Governor was emphatic that regardless of the tough and dwindling financial situation, the Restoration Government does not owe workers’ salaries, as well as that of political appointees in the state.
He therefore asked Bayelsans if they would be gullible to vote a man that siphoned the state’s money for his personal gain, plunged the state into debt and allowed them suffer untold hardship, and the people responded that they would resist him (Sylva).
Dickson, averred that he has uncovered the plans of the APC led by former Governor Sylva, to promote violence and wage war on the people in order to occupy “Creek Haven” the state seat of power at all cost, but noted that they would fail because the PDP has the 105 Councilors, 8 Councils’ Chairmen, 8 House of Representatives members, 3 Senators and all political appointees to deliver 100 percent votes to the party from the Yenogoa, the state capital to the fishing ports in the coastal communities in the state.
Said he “the APC do not have a chance in the forthcoming governorship election, by the candidate they have presented, they have concluded the election before the start, hence we don’t need to campaign”
“A man that their government at the centre say his not qualified to be a minister is person they are sending to govern Bayelsa, we certainly don’t want such ineligible person here at all” The Governor said.
The Governor said that it was still fresh in the memory of Bayelsans the insecurity that Sylva instituted in the state, where people were killed and maimed in broad daylight, a man that collected loan to pay civil servants’ salaries and later used it for self-aggrandizement; and that’s why I said they (APC) do not have a candidate that could manage the economy, as we (the PDP led Restoration Government) have managed the state’s finances prudently.
Dickson explained that even Sylva’s Campaign Director General, former Senator Heineken Lokpobiri is the worst political criminal known for hijacking election process, he has nothing to show after serving the Sagbama/Ekeremore Senatorial District for eight years, he did nothing to support the road to his district, but under my leadership the road is near completion, the Ebeni bridge has been constructed, therefore am waiting to hear what he would tell his people that he did for them, except that we did not allow him to return to the senate, basically to avert another wasted four years.
He submitted that APC led by Sylva’s brand of politics is to perpetrate violence, kill innocent people; and the trio of Sylva, Lokpobiri and Tiwei Orunimighe (the State APC Boss) is a complete team known for maiming, killings and violence in the state, but noted that Bayelsans and the PDP under his leadership would resist them from interrupting the secured environment the PDP have built in the state.
“The APC is confused, that Sylva even called Governor Adams Oshiomole a liar, sincerely something is wrong with the party and the candidate” Dickson submitted.
He noted that the Restoration Government has numerous achievements to showcase; and that the three senatorial roads in different stages of completion, as well as projects in other sectors would speak for the PDP as the party that would win the election come December 5.
Dickson urged the people to go to their polling units on the day of election and cast their votes for the performing PDP government, and to also protect it because it would be counted, even as he assured that under the watch of the security agencies, nobody would intimidate them in their communities.
He posited that Ijaw people have never been conquered, not even by the British government, urging them to go about their legitimate businesses without fear of molestation or intimidation.
Dickson expressed confidence in President Muhammadu Buhari that he would not for the sake of his party wrongly or unjustly allow a breakdown of law and order, nor allow anarchy or insurgence in any part of the country at this crucial time that all governors are working together to support issues of national security.
“I believe President Buhari would not descend to that level, and I have confidence that the security agencies would do their jobs.” the Governor said.
To this end, Dickson posited that his government remain focused to the needs and aspiration of the people, and would continue to brief them on how prudently their monies is being managed in the face of dwindling allocation from the centre.
