Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Command Headquarters, Benin, AIG Abubakar Adamu Mohammed has reacted to Front – page news photo published by the Punch newspaper, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

The picture captioned: “A man tied to a police van in Benin, Edo State” depicts police high handedness and molestation of citizens under the guise of being suspects.

AIG Mohammed in his reaction described the operatives’ conduct as unprofessional, and does not depict the ethics/core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

It violates the principle of democratic policing, he added.

In a statement signed by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Emeka Iheanacho, the Zone 5 police boss disclosed that the offending operatives have been detained while full scale investigation into the matter by the Zonal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department [ZCID] has been ordered.

Also, the offending operatives would be sanctioned as soon as investigation is concluded, he said.

Assuring that justice will be done, AIG Mohammed said victims of the operatives’ brutality; Odozi Kester, and Austin Ogbonmwan are in good health condition and assisting in the investigation.

The victim, Odozi Kester a bus driver narrated to journalists that the operatives Tuesday accosted him on Sakponba Road. They carried out a search on a boy who was a passenger in the bus but suddenly, the boy broke loose from their grip and escaped.

According to him, the operatives thereafter vented their anger on him and chained him to their van trying to force him to admit knowing the escapee. In the ensuing struggle between them, the operatives pushed him out of the van while it was in motion.

After he was dragged some distance, he passed out only to regain consciousness at the hospital he was admitted
