Deltan’s have been assured that the APC will defeat the PDP in the 2019 governorship election and that Governor Okowa will not stay in Government House, Asaba beyond May 29, 2019 as he will be sent packing after the defeat of his party.
The Chairman of APC in Delta State, Prophet Jones Erue gave the assurance in a telephone interview with our reporter while reacting to the attempt by some elements of the party to scuttle the inauguration of the Delta State executives.
It was learnt that smarting from the wounds of defeat and possible abortion of his governorship ambition, Rt Hon Victor Ochei attempted to scuttle the inauguration of the Delta State executives of the APC, Friday, July 20.
Having been inaugurated earlier in Abuja by the national chairman of the APC, HE Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the Delta State APC Chairman, Prophet Jones Erue was due to inaugurate his executive at the APC Delta State secretariat in Asaba on Friday, July 21.
But the event could not hold there as the Delta State Police Commissioner was misinformed, through an alleged petition by a group led by Victor Ochei that blood would flow if the event held at the party state secretariat as thugs and rival party members were poised to cause mayhem.
Armed with that information and without cross checking the facts, the CP mobilized policemen and sealed off the secretariat to avert any bloodshed.
But the State party chairman, Prophet Jones who was expected to conduct the inauguration was leaving Abuja for Asaba and his flight billed for 1030am was delayed till about 3pm and on learning of the development asked the party members and the executives to be inaugurated to move to the party secretariat in Oleh, Isoko South LGA where the event successfully held.
Speaking to our reporter by telephone, Prophet Jones said the Commissioner of Police acted in error.
“He did not cross check the information given to him. I understand that Rt. Hon Victor Ochei wrote the petition. But as chairman of the party in the state I do not want bloodshed, I am the chairman and where ever I am the party is there. So, I asked the party members and the executive officers who were waiting for me at the airport to move to the nearest safe party secretariat and we proceeded to Oleh branch of the party secretariat where they were successfully inaugurated.
Asked if he was disposed to reconciling with members of the Otega faction of the party, Prophet Jones said “we are reconciling but not to throw away the Court Judgment”. He quoted Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who said that Court Judgment is sweet but the unity of the people is sweeter.
Prophet Jones used the opportunity to correct claims in certain quarters that he and his team who were new to the party have hijacked the structure of the party. According to him, rather, Olorogun Emerhor Otega was relatively a fresh member of the party.
“After the death of Pius Ewherido, it was Olorogun Adelabu Bodjor that brought Otega to the party. The only old member of the party in their group is Cyril Ogodo with Hon Edoja Akpodiete. Myself and the team I lead are older than any other person” he said adding that the APC was getting stronger and more united by the day as more persons from the other group are being reconciled with his team although a few still remained adamant.
Asked if the likes of Victor Ochei were working with the PDP in Delta to frustrate his effort, Prophet Jones said, “If they like they can work with anybody but I assure you, APC will win this election and send Okowa packing on May 29, 2019.”
Reacting to the issue, a leader of the APC in Ethiope East, Mr Deniran Ufuom said: “The objective of the Otega group was to make sure that the inauguration did not hold hence they petitioned the Commissioner of Police. The police did not want bloodshed hence they sealed off the secretariat. The Otega group members are agents of doom, agents of PDP who do not want good governance in Delta State but by the grace of God they will not succeed, they will continue to fail.”
The State Assistant Organising Secretary of the party, Hon Barr Igho Aragba who was among those inaugurated in his reaction said: “They (Otega group) remain our brothers; the window is open to them so that we can work together as a team”.
Barr Matthew Omonade an aspirant for the DTHA seat of Ughelli constituency I, on the platform of the APC has this to say: “The essence of democracy is all about the welfare of the people. So if the struggle is all about Deltans who have been suffering, it is therefore not a do or die affair.
“You can see the violent nature of some persons who parade themselves as progressives. Every reasonable Deltan must condemn that act in its entirety but the good news is that their attempt to use some elements of the Nigeria Police to scuttle the inauguration was not successful. The act is condemnable; in democracy there are peaceful ways of settling issues. A competent Court of jurisdiction has taken decision on that matter and that Judgment has not been set aside and the national leadership of the party has acted on that Judgment. Let us respect the Judgment, let us come together and embrace peace and work together as one big family”
Quizzed if the schism in the party could negatively impact the outing of the party in the 2019 governorship election, Barr Omonade recalled that since 2003 Chief Great Ogboru has been single- handedly defeating the PDP even in small parties charging that if members of the rival group do not want to identify with Ogboru it is their headache.
“We can work with only those who are ready to work. If you do not believe in the ideals of the party, if you are a pseudo democrat then you can go somewhere else. With or without them APC can win election in Delta State” he concluded.
